Insights on what Unreal Engine topics lack Documentation
UNREAL SOLO GAME DEVELOPER
Read Time: 2 minutes
Learning Unreal can be difficult, it is an incredibly complex Engine and it lacks documentation and tutorials on a lot of it’s features.
Last month I asked on Twitter which areas of Unreal people felt that lacked documentation or had no documentation at all. After aggregating the answers by topic this is the result of all the answers:

It has been interesting to see that there is a lot of variety on the topics that people wanted more documentation for, but one topic rose above all: Artificial Intelligence
I suspect this is because indeed there are a lot of AI features in Unreal that are pretty powerful but lack good documentation indeed.
Some time ago it was hard to find info about Unreal existing features from long time ago and sometimes it’s even easier to find docs about all the new stuff, but it’s difficult to find how to extend the Path Following Component or how to create a custom Behavior Tree Component.
It’s even interesting to see that the EQS plugin is still in Experimental state after all these years.
The Specific AI Features people want more documented
After reading through all the answers, these are the main features people are asking for more documentation about:
Behavior Trees
Environment Query System
Perception
Navigation
Path Following
State Trees
Mass AI
Closing Thoughts
Even though I only listed the main AI topics here, you can see that there are a lot of varied areas of Unreal that lack documentation.
I might write some articles on those areas, but if you are knowledgeable about Unreal Engine don’t hesitate to share your knowledge with other people.
I at least hope that with my articles I can help you and other developers better understand all the features available in the Engine.
